Inolex Launches Spectrastat System

Inolex has introduced Spectrastat, a high-performance biostatic system for preservative-free cosmetics. According to the company, Spectrastat is the first system on the market to contain CHA, a novel patented organic acid. Unlike other organic acids, CHA is capable of stopping the growth of the fungus A. niger at a wide range of pH. CHA is non-toxic, globally acceptable and ideally suited for paraben- and preservative-free claims.

Inolex’s discovery of CHA for use in cosmetics came about after years of research into the problems associated with Aspergillus niger. “Cosmetic formulators have been demanding fungistatic ingredients that are easy-to-use and economical,” said Dan Winn, personal care business director at the company. “We found CHA to be an ideal partner for typical bacteriostatic agents already on the market, such as caprylyl glycol and ethylhexylglycerin.”

Thirty Cosmetic Ingredients Certified by BDIH at Cognis

Cognis Care Chemicals customers can now get certified ingredients for natural cosmetics, as 30 of Cognis’ basic and active ingredients have achieved the BDIH (Association of German Industries and Trading Firms) certification for use in natural cosmetics. An independent assessor working on behalf of the BDIH classified 30 cosmetic oils, emulsifiers and surfactants from Cognis Care Chemicals and its active ingredients business Laboratoires Sérobiologiques as meeting the criteria for certification.

Other Cognis products are currently at the application or evaluation stage of the BDIH certification process. In addition to those products certified by the BDIH, 90 ingredients from Cognis’ portfolio also meet the internationally recognized Ecocert standard for use in “green” cosmetics.

ISP Specialty Surfactants Gains ‘CleanGredients’ Listing

International Specialty Products (ISP) announced the listing of its Surfadone LP-100 and LP-300 specialty surfactants on CleanGredients, an online database providing formulators of industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaning products with information on chemical ingredients whose  environmental and human health attributes have been independently verified.

A CleanGredients listing signifies that test data demonstrating the aquatic toxicity, biodegradability, and ingredient formulations for Surfadone LP-100 and LP-300 have been reviewed and verified by a third party (NSF International) using the Design for the Environment (DfE) Screen for Surfactants, a set of criteria defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s DfE program for designating surfactants with especially positive environmental characteristics.

ISP’s Surfadone LP specialty surfactants are linear, N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidones ideally suited for I&I and household cleaners, fountain solutions and pigment dispersions. The surfactants exhibit superior reduction of dynamic surface tension in comparison with traditional ethoxylated surfactants (APEs, NPEs). This allows for rapid wetting on both low- and high-energy substrates.

SymClariol is Multifunctional

Last summer, Symrise launched the cosmetic ingredient SymClariol, a multifunctional active ingredient from its successful range of 1,2-alkanediols. SymClariol (INCI: decylene glycol) is a moisturizing ingredient for topical preparations and also performs well as a hair conditioner.

According to the company, beyond that, it also has excellent broad-spectrum anti-microbial effects that have been found effective especially for anti-acne, anti-dandruff, deodorant and personal hygiene products. Symrise has now published new data that shows that SymClariol can do much more, especially in rinse-off formulations like shampoos and shower gels. In extensive tests, SymClariol was found to have a significant impact on functional properties of the formulation like foam and viscosity.

This means that the product can be used to reduce the concentration of surfactants commonly used in rinse-off formulations, and thus reduces irritation. More info: www.symrise.com
